Everything you need to know before buying bathroom fixtures

The days when water had to be collected in a bucket or pumped from one place in the house are long gone. Modern houses have water pipes with cold and hot water, and there is hardly a inhabited house left where the only source of water is a well or a pump.

Water pipes mean taps, and when there is cold and hot water, also mixer taps. In addition, there are all kinds of showers and similar “appliances” to get the water out of the pipe.

This brings us to the concept of fittings. Fittings have a functional side — to turn on/off water — but also to a large extent an aesthetic side. Fittings should look good in addition to their obvious function. Design means, among other things, that things on an aesthetic level should be coherent in their expression, which means that it is a logical consequence that fittings are sold separately, so that you can put together furniture, cabins, screens and the like with greater freedom and with consideration for design coherence.

Fixtures and approvals

Previously, taps (faucets) sold on the Danish market had to be VA-approved. However, this system has been changed several times in recent years.

VA stands for water and drainage installations. The approval was to ensure that the product met safety requirements regarding health. The test checks for lead and cadmium emissions, and the tap must meet the Nordic regulations in this area, prepared by the Nordic Committee for Building Regulations. The total amount of dissolved cadmium must not exceed 2 µg (micrograms) and the total amount of dissolved lead must not exceed 20 µg.

In 2013, a new approval scheme came into force, which marks approved products with the “drop mark”. This scheme replaces the VA scheme. Since 1 April 2014, the VA mark may no longer be used. Products that require approval and that have received that approval before that date still have a VA approval number. However, they must also be marked with the drop mark.

The VA approval and the new Droplet marking must appear on the product's packaging, and other documentation may be required, for example, that the receipt states that it is an approved product. The product itself must be provided with an indestructible manufacturing mark, which ensures that the product can be identified at all times.

Goods covered by the approval requirement are all goods that are part of a fixed drinking water installation. In practice, this means that water pipes, hoses and taps, etc. must be approved. The non-fixed parts in drinking water installations do NOT need to have an approval. This group includes, among other things, water pipes, hoses, etc. that connect from cold water systems to appliances. Shower fittings, shower heads and the associated hoses, as well as, for example, taps that are used exclusively for garden watering, must also not have a “Drop Mark”.

Bathtub faucets

Not all bathtubs have an integrated faucet. That's why the SPA company sells faucets designed for use with a bathtub. These come in two types: wall-mounted faucets and floor-mounted faucets.

A freestanding bathtub can be placed more freely if the faucet is mounted on the floor. This of course requires that both water pipes and drains have been taken into account for this purpose. Wall-mounted faucets must be sized so that the water — even in a thin stream or dripping — falls into the bathtub, and not on the edge or, worse, next to the tub.

The SPA company's freestanding faucets have an integrated hand shower, while the wall-mounted faucets have a connection to a shower hose with a hand shower, which is purchased separately.

Bathroom fixtures

There are many different faucets for the bathroom. You can find something for almost every taste.

Most faucets come with a standard drain plug set. However, this does not guarantee that the type of drain plug is suitable for the selected sink. Therefore, the SPA company sells drain plug sets as a separate product.

The fixtures are sold with a 5- or 10-year drip warranty. In addition, the SPA company's 3-year product warranty also applies.

Kitchen faucets

The SPA company also has a limited number of kitchen faucets. These can of course also be used in the bathroom, but with their tall design, they are actually intended for the kitchen, where faucets must meet other uses.

The kitchen faucets also come with a 5- or 10-year drip warranty, and have the same high quality standard as the bathroom faucets.

Thermostatic faucets

Thermostatic faucets control the water temperature, so you are free to regulate it manually during the bath.

The fittings are combined with separately sold shower hoses and heads or shower bar sets.

The SPA company's popular ART shower cabins come with a standard mixer tap, and a thermostatic faucet can be used to replace the mixer tap, making the cabin suddenly more luxurious.

Shower rod set

Shower rail sets are not fittings, but accessories for, for example, thermostatic fittings or wall-mounted bathtub fittings.

The sets consist of a rod that is screwed to the wall, as well as a hose and shower head.

The shower head has several functions that are selected by turning the plate with the nozzles. The shower head is equipped with anti-limescale nozzles that make it easy to remove limescale deposits.

The sets are available in chrome and brushed steel. Under accessories, the SPA company also sells shower heads in different sizes.

Shower faucet

Unlike shower rod sets, the shower faucet is a complete unit. The SPA company sells shower faucets for wall mounting and for embedding in the wall.

Most sets have both a head shower and a hand shower with multiple functions and are available both with and without a thermostat.

Shower columns have a “body” made of metal or acrylic and are equipped with nozzles for back massage.

Overhead showers

Overhead showers with “tropical rain” and anti-limescale nozzles are available in both round and square shapes in brushed steel.

The shower heads have standard threads and can be used to replace an old shower head or used as an alternative solution in one of the shower fittings.

Overhead showers come in two sizes.

Accessories

The SPA company has a selection of accessories for the faucets, which include shower heads, shower hoses, water savers and more.

Maintenance

Chrome-plated fixtures or products in brushed steel: Fixtures with chrome-plated surfaces should be wiped daily with a damp cloth and then dried with a dry, soft cloth. Only use non-abrasive and non-chlorine cleaning agents. Never use abrasive sponges or similar.

Colored surfaces: Fixtures with colored surfaces should be wiped daily with a damp cloth and then dried with a dry, soft cloth. Cleaning should be done without the use of chemical products. Never use abrasive sponges or similar.

Air mixers: Air mixer nozzles should be cleaned and inspected once a year or as needed. If limescale builds up, clean with vinegar or lemon, or replace the nozzle.
